The National Mall – Washington, D.C.

Visiting the National Mall was a great experience!  I started the morning with a visit to our nation’s Capitol (prearrange tickets online or through your Congressman).  I have to say it is pretty overwhelming in person and there is a strong feeling of pride and patriotism unlike anything I’ve experienced.  Unfortunately, the guided tours are pretty fast because of the amount of tourists they have to accommodate; so it’s difficult to see everything around you, but it is still worth visiting nonetheless.  You can also request Gallery Passes from your Congressman which will allow you to view the House and/or Senate Galleries and witness Congress in session.

After leaving the Capitol I headed down toward the Washington Monument passing the Smithsonian’s many museums and castle, caught a south lawn view of the White House and proceeded to the WWII Memorial.  Between the WWII Memorial and Lincoln Memorial is the reflecting pool; on the north side you will find Constitution Gardens and the Vietnam Memorial; to the south the Korean War Veterans Memorial.  There are beautiful tree lined paths on either side of the reflecting pool which really makes for an enjoyable walk.

There is so much to see and do in Washington, D.C., this city has fantastic architecture, a mega diverse culture, and lively nightlife.  Check out the Georgetown area for dining, shopping, and accommodations as well, I stayed in this area and it has much to do in walking distance and is very quaint.

Note: Parking is a nightmare and where available, pricey!  I recommend the D.C. Metro or a taxi from your hotel.
