Historic Jamestowne
Historic Jamestowne is the site of America’s first permanent English colony, located on the banks of the James River in Virginia. An interesting fact is this is also where the first arrival of Africans to English North American was documented.
A visit to Historic Jamestowne will include walking through the excavated areas where the settlements farms, church, and fort were located; note much that there is to see here is left up to the imagination. A highlight for us was the Glasshouse, which you will pass on your drive up to the entrance. You can watch the glassblowers at work and purchase a one-of-a-kind item made on sight. Also, the Dale House Café offers cafeteria style dining and spectacular views of the James River if you’re interested.
Jamestown Settlement
The Jamestown Settlement is a re-creation of the Jamestown Fort and a Virginia Powhatan Indian Village. As well as a living history museum, they offer educational films and gallery exhibits. Tour a re-creation of an Indian Village, watch character actors at work, board and explore replicas of the three ships that arrived in Virginia from England (The Susan Constant, Godspeed and Discovery), and wander through the fort’s homes, buildings, and exhibits.
