Colonial Williamsburg – Williamsburg, Virginia

Colonial Williamsburg was the original capital of Virginia and at present is the largest living history museum in the U.S.  A visit is like a step back in time as you wander the streets, tour the buildings, homes, stores and dine in its taverns on period fare.  Tradesmen practice 18th century crafts and trades, and character actors in period costume add to the experience.  You can reserve a horse drawn carriage or coach for a tour as well, which was a highlight for us.  If you’re lucky, the fife and drums will march through and entertain during your visit too.  As a tip, when visiting Colonial Williamsburg, make sure you are prepared to do plenty of walking.  Of course, a tour bus will take you from the visitor center to various stops surrounding the sights, and they run quite late which is great if you stay for dinner.

If you are interested in having dinner in Colonial Williamsburg, you will need to make reservations in advance at most taverns.  We dined at Christiana Campbell’s Tavern which was a favorite of George Washington.  Their menu is 18th century inspired and makes for a delicious and entertaining evening with great atmosphere, entertainment, and food.

These are two different places! Historic Jamestowne is the site of America’s first permanent English colony, located on the banks of the James River in Virginia. The Jamestown Settlement is a re-creation of the Jamestown Fort and a Virginia Powhatan Indian Village.
