Dubrovnik, Croatia

The Croatian city of Dubrovnik is beautifully situated on the Adriatic Sea and known as its pearl.  Personally, Dubrovnik is one of the most beautiful cities I have ever visited and understandably a prominent destination for tourists.  Interestingly, at one point in history Dubrovnik was the only rival of the beauty and development of Venice.  This walled city, which was initially a protective measure, holds so many historical treasures it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.  The walls themselves are a large feature of Dubrovnik and can be walked upon to get a birds-eye view of the city, sea, and mountains.

When you arrive in Dubrovnik you will want several days to explore the city from its shops, museums, churches, one of the world’s oldest operating pharmacies, and inviting cafés.  Inside the city walls you cannot travel by car, which in my opinion adds to it charming appeal.  As a caution, some of the old streets and crevices can be steep and accessed only by many steep steps, so be prepared.  What you cannot prepare for is the awe-inspiring vistas, architecture, and history; it is truly stunning.
