The Detroit Institute of Arts located in Midtown off of Woodward Avenue in Detroit offers a tremendous collection of art for the enthusiast and newbie alike.  The DIA maintains one of the largest art collections in the country with over 60,000 works art including: Africa, Oceania and the Indigenous Americas, American Art, The Arts of Asia and the Islamic World, European Art, Prints, Drawings, and Photographs, General Motors Center for African American Art, The James Pearson Duffy Department of Contemporary Art, and Performing Arts Collections.  This museum is a fantastic and affordable way to spend a day and is sure to entertain and enlighten.  Lastly, they have a café and a coffee shop where you can grab lunch or a snack and their gift shop is quite impressive as well.
