Growing up in the Detroit area, Ford plays a pretty big part in its locale. Not to mention I’m a big fan of touring historical homes and such, so the Henry Ford Estate was a must. The home, in Henry Ford style, produced its own energy with Fords powerhouse which can be toured along with his laboratory, garage, house, gardens, and grounds. In its day, you can imagine that it must have been impressive, unfortunately when I visited, the homes condition seemed to be following Ford's stock prices. I was primarily disappointed because the original contents are no longer, with the exception of a few select pieces and replicas. An interesting part of the home was the tunnel that connected Ford’s powerhouse to the main house that Ford built after the Lindbergh kidnapping, complete with iron gates for security. All things considered, the home has an interesting history and I enjoyed the visit and surrounding gardens.
Also, Henry Ford’s only son Edsel Ford has an estate that can be toured in Grosse Point Sores, MI and is definitely a worthwhile place to consider touring. More on the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House.
