Michigan
I am a Metro Detroit native, although no longer reside there. That being said… It took me a few years after I left, matured, and traveled to appreciate what I had left behind. I am sure I’m not alone when it comes to the abusive relationship one has with their hometown. We often take for granted the place we call home; we rarely have the capacity to see its beauty and assets. For this Detroit, I am sorry. I am sorry because I have yet to come across a place with such heart, a place where the beauty truly lies in its people. Detroiters have conviction when it comes to their town and all that that includes. From Sports… go Tiger’s, go Red Wings, and um go Lion’s (as hard as the latter is to admit), to the decay of its crumbling foundation. There is a pride and an edge to Detroiter’s; we love to say we’re from Detroit (and to see the terror it invokes). Maybe that’s all they have at times… you can take away their jobs, repo their cars, foreclose their homes, but the attitude is bought and paid for. Paid for through assembly line working, battery jumping, coney dog eating, hockey loving, basement party having, can’t believe it’s still snowing, apple picking, city, state, and federal tax paying, diversity proud, bottle refunding, willing to pay any price for cigarettes smoking, pop drinking folks. These people work hard, play hard, and love hard. It pains me to see the strain that they have endured in recent times, but I’ve been back often and am happy to know their spirits are resilient and feisty. I’m pulling for you Detroit; you’ve gotten the short end for being the backbone time and time again, but stay strong. There is honor in your resolve and a rebirth is inevitable.
