Costa Maya (Mahahual), Mexico

The port of Costa Maya consists of a small area with some shops, a beach, and a bar with a pool.  If you want to actually do something when in port in Costa Maya, I suggest going into the small town of Mahahual.  It is a short drive from the port and is still recovering from previous hurricane damage (as of April 2009) so don’t expect too much.  However, Mahahual has great shopping (bring cash) from local merchants and restaurants which line the beach front.  You can get a one hour full body massage right on the beach for $30 or a bucket of Corona’s and plant yourself in the sand.  We actually rented golf carts from the port and drove ourselves to Mahahual and toured around a bit.  Just remember to negotiate, negotiate, negotiate.
