Belize City, Belize – Central America

I visited Belize through the port in Belize City. The port itself is relatively small and feels extremely crowded, even with one ship in port. Belize City unfortunately was not a very friendly city; there is a lot of poverty and crime to be aware of. I am not typically a paranoid traveler, but there was a general uneasiness that fellow traveler’s agreed that they felt.

There is not much in the way of shopping, dining, or attractions in Belize City. That being said, it is my opinion that you definitely need to schedule an excursion or tour in advance. However, once you arrive in port, you will have numerous opportunities to schedule a tour, and possibly save in comparison to cruise ship excursion prices.  If you have a limited amount of time, then you may want to browse the port. Also, just outside the port you will find a small market with crafts and souvenirs that is worthwhile, but you will have fight through the tremendously aggressive taxi solicitations. In addition, and as in many ports of call, negotiate your rate before getting into any taxi.
