St Maarteen / St Martin – Eastern Caribbean Island
Date: 7/20/2009 4:56:04 AM Category: General

Let me start by saying, this island is awesome! As clarified by our taxi driver, the Dutch side of the island is St Maarten and the French side St Martin, but you can pronounce them the same. An interesting and unique place, this 37 square mile island is the smallest land mass shared by two nations and a role model for peaceful coexistence.

If you’re a beach person, St Maarteen/ St Martin have a few to choose from, actually I’m kidding, there are 37 beautiful beaches, so have at it. Philipsburg's on the Dutch side has awesome shopping and vibrant feel; you’ll want to head toward Front Street. Marigot is the capital of the French side and the Marigot waterfront is a great area to stroll the town, shop the boutiques, dine in the cafes and bistros, treat yourself at a pastry shop, and enjoy the Caribbean vibe. Every Wednesday and Saturday morning there is an open-air market on the Boulevard de France near the West Indies Mall and is a must if you’re around on either day of the week.
A tip to those traveling by cruise ship, St Maarteen / St Martin is a visitor friendly island and taxis are abundant upon arrival at the port. My husband and I typically negotiate with a taxi driver to give us a tour and take us here and there. You will have to do a little advance research so you’ll know where you want to go, but you’ll save at least half of cruise ship excursions, you won’t be stuck on a bus, and you’ll have the freedom to take your time and shape your own day/visit.
