We arrived in Barbados via The Port of Bridgetown. Bridgetown is the capital of Barbados and offers many historical sites, attractions, and great shopping. It’s just a short walk along the water from the port into town where you’ll pass some local merchants and vendors. Broad Street is the main street in town and has some nice department stores and duty free shops worth paying a visit.
We took a tour bus from the port to the Sunbury Plantation House & Museum in St. Phillip. Located in a sea of sugar cane fields, the Sunbury House dates back to the mid 1600’s, built by an early English settler. You can tour every room of the house and wander the beautifully landscaped gardens, and you should find this to be the makings of a great afternoon.
Another short drive from Bridgetown is the Gun Hill Signal Station in St. George parish that was used by the British Army and dates back to 1818. Signal stations were utilized to sight and signal of approaching ships and were also used to warn of slave rebellions.
St. John’s Parish Church is a beautiful Gothic style church and a worthwhile visit. Placed on an overlook of the east Atlantic coast; the church was reconstructed in 1836 after being destroyed by a hurricane in 1831. Interestingly, the church yard is the resting place for a descendant of Constantine the Great, Ferdinando Paleologus, who died there in 1678.
